British design atelier @arterton.london have just completed a beautiful @nakata_hanger installation on the mezzanine at The Cut. Arterton supplies bespoke hangers to much of Savile Row, so it felt only right for them to create an installation at The Service that celebrated the beauty and craftsmanship behind Nakata’s handcrafted Japanese hangers. When they asked if we’d like to collaborate on a new installation for The Cut as well, we didn’t hesitate. We’d been eyeing the blank back wall for far too long, wondering what might belong there — this felt like the answer. The installation speaks directly to our roots on Savile Row, while showcasing the exceptional quality and detail of Nakata hangers. The craftsmanship represents the pinnacle of Japanese woodworking, with each piece embodying the brand’s mantra of “crafting with heart” — not unlike the care and attention that goes into every cup of coffee made by our team. This was a nice surprise. I commissioned this bespoke shirt from @dylanandson sight unseen–if you follow his account, he occasionally throws up -30% sales on end-of-roll fabrics. I figured I would wear it without jacket—with these sand linen trousers (Solbiati Art Du Lin, @loropiana, @seamlessbespoke)—as it was described as a particularly thick, dry, and crunchy linen But after collection, I have found that it pairs nicely under my tobacco Irish linen jacket (also from @seamlessboke), probably because the jacket is in an even heavier linen (from @wbill1846 ) I further found that it looks pretty cool with this metallic olive silk knit tie (from @liveranoandliverano). Not needed, but looks good? Styled here with my Ultra Goliath II spectacles, which I should find the strength to wear more often. Also with my @iwcwatches Portugieser Back to the shirt: construction is terrific. I didn’t opt for any hand finishing as I have on other shirts because the work gets lost on such a strongly patterned cloth. No point. Do look how the pocket is invisible with the perfect pattern matching. Also love how the fabric is aligned at the shoulder. The Noto earthquake that occurred on January 1st, 2024 caused a significant damage to people in Ishikawa including lacquer workshops and craftsmen that have being working with us. We had stopped taking orders for a while, but the production has now been resumed. Since we are manufacturing the product and while preparing the tools, we will be able to accept orders and the estimated time for delivery will be about a year. Wajima lacquerware is a Japanese traditional craft technique and is said to be the greatest of lacquerware. It is our mission to keep on ordering and save this 500 years technique and the craftsmen to exist. When customers see a name engraved hangers, we sometimes get a unique question. That's about the engraved color. Someone asks us, "Does it have a gold color?" The answer is, NO. Actually this is the natural wood color under the finished color. For the engraving method, we are adopting a laser engraving, which slightly scratches the surface of a hanger by a laser. After engraving, we can see the true wood color hidden under the coating. Our hangers are made of natural beech woods. So all hangers have different color on the engraved part. However as they say, it may seem to be a gold color. Does this mean that our hanger has a sense of luxury?(We hope so.) Even if having only name or initials, the hanger will be the special one. We guess that many people who had seen our showroom in preparation regarded us as one of a apparel shop. Most of the hangers at that time were flat, but this one has thick and rounded shoulders. "Hakuraigata" means carried by a ship from abroad, and it seems that a craftsman of our company made the hanger in imitation of foreign ones. The fact that the shape of the hanger was called that way reminds me that hangers were brought from abroad. I also imagine that there was some kind of admiration for Europe, the center of fashion. In the 1960's, NAKATA KOGEI's woodworking skills were further refined. Until then, flat hangers were the mainstream, but we started to make curved and thick hangers.
