One of the most popular summer events in Japan is National High School Baseball Championship,
commonly known as the Summer Koshien where is a baseball ground in Japan.
One school team from each prefecture in Japan is allowed to participate there.
Koshiens’ best characteristic is that the tournament ends when the team loses.
So it means there is no next round if they lose once.
In other words, the champion team is the only one that has not lost and is able to play baseball the longest in the summer.
Baseball is a popular sport in the United States, but there is no such tournament for high school students.
And some might say, “It’s a pity that once you lose, it means the end of the summer.”
I can agree with the opinion. However, I think this is Koshien’s one charm.
The summer Koshien tournament is held every August.
I sometimes hear people say, “ When the tournament is over, it feels like this summer is over, too.” I think so too!
Perhaps it’s because the cheers and brass band performances cease, and the mood becomes instantly more subdued.
And as the season gradually turns from summer to fall, I think, “I should get ready for a change of clothes.”
In my closet, wool coats and corduroy pants are waiting for their turn. And also, I can’t help but notice the hangers.
So everyone, why don’t you take a look at your closet, too?

日本の夏の風物詩の１つに、全国高等学校野球選手権大会、通称夏の甲子園があります。
日本全国各県から１校が甲子園に参加することができます。
甲子園の大きな特徴の１つは、「負けたら終わり」であるところではないでしょうか。
甲子園は地方予選時からトーナメント制ではなく勝ち上がり方式なので、負けたら次はありません。
つまり、大会で優勝したチームは予選から一度も負けずに勝ち続けたチームということになり、
その夏一番長く野球をプレーできたチームということでもあります。
野球が盛んなアメリカでは高校生による甲子園のような大会は無いようで、
また「一度負けたらそれきりなんて可哀想」という声もあるようですが、これも甲子園の醍醐味の１つだと思います。
夏の甲子園は毎年８月に開催されていますが、「大会が終わると今年の夏も終わったように感じる」という声を時々聞きます。
歓声やブラスバンドの演奏が止んでしまうと、途端に物静かな気持ちになるからでしょうか。
そして季節が少しずつ夏から秋に移ろい、「そろそろ衣替えの準備をしないといけないな」と私は思い始めます。
我が家のクローゼットではウールのコートやコーデュロイのパンツが出番を静かに待っています。そしてついハンガーに目を留めてしまいます。
