I had a chance to meet my friend living in Kyoto in July.
When I decided the day to go, she was really surprised to hear that.
“Wow, you’re really lucky. It’s the day of Yamahoko – Junko, the highlight of Gion Festival.
So why don’t you see it? You can enjoy it.” Actually, that was out of my plan, but I felt mysterious luck.
Then we planned to see Yamahoko- Junko.
Gion Festival is one of the most famous and largest festivals in Japan.
It takes place over the entire month of July, and various rituals and events are held.
Yamahoko-Junko is the grand parade of floats with luxurious decorations, called Hoko and Yama. On the morning of July 17 and 24, they are drawn through the streets of Kyoto.
Every float (especially Hoko) is very huge and gorgeous, and looks extraordinarily heavy! They gave me a very powerful impression.
Due to the interruption by COVID-19, this parade was held for the first time in 3 years.
I felt this long interval made people in Kyoto more energetic for this conventional event.
It was a really hot and humid day. However, I didn’t get tired but excited. The participants looked happy and enjoying, too.
Each float has a district to which it belongs, and it is dismantled there. When it arrived there, the chairman of the town had a great closing address.
He appreciated the participants, tourists, festival partners, and Kyoto.
My heart was filled with great satisfaction. So I couldn’t speak anything and just stood there for a while.
Once the float finished a parade, people immediately begin dismantling work.
You may miss it. I could not believe it, too. I wish I could watch the gorgeous float more!
But Hoko and Yama play the role of purifying the streets of Kyoto.
Not to stay the bad luck in floats collected by the parade, they must be dismantled as soon as possible.
Originally Yamahoko-Junko was held to appease evil deities who cause epidemics and troubles.
We are still in a hard time of the disaster of COVID-19, so I am sure that many people there were watching the parade in hope that the pandemic would be dispelled soon.
That is just a origin and true meaning of having a festival.
It was just a coincidence that the meeting day was the day of Yamahoko-Junko.
So I am wondering if that Gion Festival had called me to come here.
That was a very significant day for me.

7月に京都に住む友人と会う機会がありました。
私が都合の良い日にちを指定したところ、友人は「丁度その日は祇園祭の山鉾巡行がある日だよ、すごい日を選んだね。」と驚いていました。
祇園祭のことを全く意識していなかったので私も驚きましたが、これは何かの縁だと思い、友人と人生初の山鉾巡行見学を決行しました。
祇園祭とは、日本三大祭にも数えられる、京都の大きなお祭です。7月から約1ヶ月間にわたり様々な神事、行事が行われ、
その中の一番の見どころとされているのが山鉾巡行です。
とても大きく、豪華絢爛な鉾や山が京都の町中を巡行するので、間近で見ると大変な迫力がありました。
この山鉾巡行はコロナ禍による中止もあって、今年が３年ぶりの巡行だったそうです。それもあり、
人々が今日という日をいかに待ち望んでいたのかをひしひしと感じました。当日は大変暑い一日でしたが、みな疲れたどころか活き活きした表情をしていました。
私と友人はある１つの鉾を追いかけ続け、鉾が鉾町に戻ってくるところまで見届けることができました。
最後に町の理事の方が締めの挨拶を行い、周りの観覧者も巻き込んで一緒に三本締めをしました。
何かとても大きなことを成し遂げた気持ちになり、感極まって私と友人はしばらく何も喋らずその場に棒立ちになってしまいました。
山鉾は巡行が終わるとすぐに解体作業が始まります。立派な鉾なのに勿体ないなと思いますよね。
山鉾は街中を巡行することで厄を集めるとされており、集めた厄を留めないようにするためなので致し方ありません。
祇園祭はもともと疫病が流行した際に災厄の除去を祈ったことが由来です。
未だコロナ禍の渦中ですので、疫病退散を願って山鉾を見ていた方も大勢いたのではないかと思います。
改めてお祭りを行う意義に気付かされた一日にもなりました。
私が友人に会おうとした日と山鉾巡行の日が重なったのは本当に偶然だったので、私は山鉾に呼ばれて京都に行ったのかもしれません。
